New Delhi: A 40-year-old man died after allegedly suffering a medical emergency while lodged in a police lock-up in southwest Delhi’s Vasant Kunj Tuesday, with his family alleging custodial assault and police maintaining that no external injuries were found on him.

He was booked under Sections 126 and 170 of the BNSS. Police said that around 9.22am Tuesday, Ram suddenly developed a medical emergency.

Police said Prahlad Ram had been apprehended Monday following a quarrel in Ruchi Vihar, Vasant Kunj. Ram was medically examined at Safdarjung Hospital after being apprehended, and no fresh external injuries were recorded, according to police. His medico-legal case report recorded no external injuries, police said. Police said further proceedings were being carried out in accordance with National Human Rights Commission guidelines. When I reached the police station, I was told he had died there.

He was subsequently lodged in the lock-up of Vasant Kunj North police station. Personnel administered CPR and rushed him to Indian Spinal Injuries Centre in Vasant Kunj, where he was declared brought dead. The court was informed about the death and the family was notified. Ram’s wife, however, alleged that he had been assaulted in police custody. “I was filling water from a tanker when a man abused me and pulled a knife on my husband. We complained to police, who then picked up my husband. He was beaten so badly in custody that he died. How can police do this?” she alleged.
