KYS called it “discriminatory” and alleged that student organisations had failed to challenge the provision. KYS said the students of SOL and NCWEB, many of whom came from govt schools and disadvantaged backgrounds, faced limited access to classrooms, libraries, study material, transport concessions, academic counselling and other facilities available to regular DU students. “Just because SOL and NCWEB students do not have any vote, their issues do not get voted,” KYS said, arguing that these students were being “doubly invisibilised” in DUSU politics. The posters carried slogans, including “No more apathy towards students of SOL and NCWEB by DU and DUSU”, “Money, cars & votes everywhere! but where are the issues of SOL-NCWEB students?” and “Why are the issues of six lakh SOL students missing in the election noise?
New Delhi: Krantikari Yuva Sangathan (KYS) took out a ‘self-respect march’ at Delhi University Friday, raising the issue of the exclusion of around six lakh students enrolled through School of Open Learning (SOL) and Non-Collegiate Women’s Education Board (NCWEB) from the DUSU electorate. KYS demanded that these students be given voting rights in the DU Students’ Union elections, which were held Friday. As per the Lyngdoh Committee guidelines, which govern student union polls across the country, informal-mode students like those enrolled in SOL are barred from participating in polls. Carrying banners and placards, the protesters marched from Arts Faculty, crossing SRCC, DRC, Ramjas, Hindu, St Stephen’s and KMC, before ending the march at Arts Faculty. Protesters questioned why these students’ concerns had not figured in the DUSU election discourse. Download the TOI App.
