To reduce traffic pressure on Barapullah, Delhi govt to fast-track elevated Ring Road project
NEW DELHI: The Delhi government is looking to fast-track its Rs 7,000-crore elevated Ring Road project following growing traffic pressure around Sarai Kale Khan and the newly opened Barapullah Phase 3, with officials saying the 55-km corridor is planned to improve connectivity between east Delhi and the rest of the capital. Officials said the need for additional road capacity had become more pressing after the opening of Barapullah Phase 3. Three stretches will initially be taken up on priority — Azadpur Flyover to Hanuman Temple (ISBT), covering 9.5 km; Chandgi Ram Akhara to Majnu Ka Tilla, covering 2.5 km; and Hanuman Temple (ISBT) to DND Flyover, covering 11.5 km, according to the plan.
Public Works Department Minister Parvesh Singh Verma said the detailed project report for the first package had been approved by Chief Minister Rekha Gupta. The detailed project report for the first package is ready and has been approved by the Chief Minister recently,” Verma said. As part of the plan to decongest the Ring Road, the government is working on a new bridge near the existing Signature Bridge, officials said. The DND road further connects to the Ashram flyover, a key arterial route in south Delhi, officials said.
“Under long-term measures, our elevated Ring Road project will add two flyovers over the Yamuna river, which will improve traffic management along the area. The Ring Road stretch around Sarai Kale Khan, a key link between central Delhi and southeast and east Delhi, has witnessed rising traffic volumes, prompting the government to push ahead with the elevated corridor.
