Hyderabad: A group of around 14 passengers allegedly assaulted railway ticket-checking staff during a special drive at Nanded railway station under South Central Railway (SCR) on Monday. The incident occurred around 5.30 am on platform No. 2, when two ticket-checking personnel were checking passengers attempting to board Marathwada Express, which was travelling towards Manmad. However, the train began moving around 5.32 am, following which the train manager noticed the commotion and stopped the train. Railway staff, assisted by Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel, managed to bring 10 of the passengers to the ticket inspector’s office.
The group, which was allegedly travelling without tickets, began assaulting the on-duty ticket-checking staff when they were approached for ticket verification, according to SCR. The remaining four passengers escaped from the spot, according to SCR. One of the TTEs, RK Singh, was allegedly dragged into the moving train. Another TTE, Jitendra Kumar, tried to intervene. Other ticket-checking staff at the station were alerted and rushed to the platform.
The 10 passengers were subsequently handed over to Nanded GRP. TTE RK Singh sustained injuries in the assault and was shifted to Railway Hospital for treatment. A medico-legal case was also registered at the hospital. Accordingly, GRP has registered an FIR under various applicable sections of the BNS for allegedly assaulting public servants on duty and wilfully obstructing them from discharging their duties. The railways appealed to passengers to cooperate with ticket-checking staff and travel with authorised tickets or proper travelling authority. It also cautioned rail users that obstructing railway staff in the discharge of their duties or assaulting them while on duty could lead to criminal proceedings, apart from penalties.
