After giving away 25 acres to sons, elderly couple end life with no means to survive

The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

Hyderabad: After distributing their farmland and house among their three sons, an elderly couple in Chapta (K) village of Narayankhed mandal in Sangareddy were left struggling for food and shelter. The couple, who had repeatedly approached officials seeking the return of a small portion of their land to support themselves, died by suicide on Wednesday morning.

Police identified the deceased as Munge Narsa Reddy (88) and his wife Anjamma (85). The couple had divided their total property of 25 acres among their sons and transferred it to them, expecting to be looked after in their old age, according to police. On some days, the couple reportedly ate the midday meal served at a govt school as they had no means to prepare food at home, police said. Narayankhed CI G Srinivas Reddy said Narsa Reddy had approached officials at various levels, seeking the return of one or two acres from the land distributed among his sons so the couple could have a source of income. “But his requests did not yield a solution,” he said.

The couple had three sons, Siddha Reddy, Krishna Reddy and Sangareddy. Narsa Reddy owned agricultural land and a house in the village. However, the sons allegedly stopped caring for them after the property was transferred. For the past two to three years, the couple had struggled to meet their basic needs and depended on relatives in the village for shelter. Anjamma’s health had deteriorated and she was unable to cook regularly. With neither sufficient income nor land to depend on, the couple’s condition worsened. Police registered a case based on a complaint lodged by the couple’s grandson, Munge Maruthi Reddy, and are investigating the circumstances leading to their deaths. Download the TOI App.
