At the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA), 135 IPS probationers and 16 foreign officers will complete phase I training at the Dikshant Parade on Saturday. The batch includes officers from Nepal, Bhutan and the Maldives, and 37 women among the Indian probationers. Hyderabad: From cybercrime and AI to protest dynamics and crowd psychology, IPS training is evolving to meet the changing demands of policing.
Probationer Kuhoo Garg said training covered digital evidence collection, including call detail records, tower dumps, hash values and Section 63 certificates under the Bharatiya Sakshya Adhiniyam. After the parade, they will undergo 29 weeks of district practical training before returning for a nine-week phase II course in June 2027. Women accounted for 27% of the Indian probationers this year, down from 36% last year, when 62 of 174 trainees were women.

“One of the key aspects of the training for the 78th Regular Recruit batch was the emphasis on cybersecurity, machine learning, big data analytics, illegal immigration and the changing nature of protests,” academy director Sujeet Pandey said at a curtain-raiser on Thursday. “Along with understanding the values of traditional policing, they have to be technologically sound,” he said, adding that training also focused on crowd management and countering external forces seeking to disrupt the country. “The base of all instruction was to ensure that every person is treated as our own kith and kin and our own countrymen,” said B Shivachandran, a probationer from Tamil Nadu who cleared the civil services examination on his fifth attempt. He said the focus was on handling crowds with minimal force while recognising that people could have genuine grievances. The aim was to equip officers to guide teams in collecting and preserving electronic evidence, she said.
Field exposure included a week with Telangana Police’s Greyhounds, observing jungle operations. Probationers will also train with the CRPF in left-wing extremism-affected areas and the Army in northern and eastern sectors. Download the TOI App.
