Police said that Aleemuddin’s late father had held an arms licence for self-protection

The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

Hyderabad: A 45-year-old businessman, Md Aleemuddin, who shot himself with his licensed firearm, had cleared all required checks, including a medical fitness assessment. His arms licence, issued in 2016-17 and subsequently renewed, was supported by a doctor’s certificate declaring him fit to handle a weapon. An earlier suicide attempt, however, had not been reported to the police.

Meanwhile, Chandrayangutta police also booked businessman Amer Bin Sayeed, 41, and his cousin Valeed Hussain after Amer allegedly fired three rounds into the air using Valeed’s licensed revolver at a wedding in Aug 2025.

Police said that Aleemuddin’s late father had held an arms licence for self-protection. “Aleemuddin obtained a licence under the same category in 2016-17 and legally acquired his father’s firearm,” said South Zone DCP Kiran Khare, adding that the licence was subsequently renewed after the required documentation, including a medical fitness certificate, was submitted. Khare said police assess an applicant’s need for a weapon and criminal antecedents before issuing a fresh licence. Khare said that recently, police recommended cancellation of two licences linked to Kanchanbagh and Mirchowk police stations after the weapons were allegedly used in a blackbuck hunting case in Narayanpet. Investigators said another accused had allegedly misused Reddy’s weapon. The case is being transferred to Balapur police station, where the alleged offence took place, Rajendranagar DCP S Srinivas said.

Police pointed out that they recommend licence cancellation whenever they learn of a firearm being misused, citing recent cases in Moinabad, Chandrayangutta and Narayanpet. In another case, Moinabad police sought cancellation of Pilot Rohith Reddy’s weapon licence after a raid in March on his farmhouse led to the registration of an NDPS and Arms Act case. Cyberabad police issued Reddy a show-cause notice. Police learnt of the incident through a video that recently circulated on social media.
