Telangana GST, VAT collections rise 16.4% in April-Aug: The wider industry impact

Hyderabad: Telangana recorded strong growth in indirect tax collections during the April-August period, with combined GST and VAT revenues rising 16.39% to ₹36,636 crore from ₹31,477 crore in the corresponding period last year.

GST collections were the main driver of growth, increasing 19.80% during the five-month period. Collections rose from ₹17,414 crore in April-Aug 2025 to Rs 20,862 crore in April-Aug 2026, an increase of Rs 3,448 crore. Collections rose from ₹14,063 crore to ₹15,774 crore, an increase of ₹1,711 crore or 12.16%. The combined increase in GST and VAT collections stood at ₹5,159 crore during April-Aug, indicating sustained growth in tax revenues during the first five months of financial year. GST collections increased from ₹3,641 crore in August 2025 to ₹4,341 crore in Aug 2026, an increase of ₹700 crore or 19.22%. VAT collections rose from ₹2,712 crore to ₹3,193 crore during same period, registering an increase of ₹481 crore or 17.73%. Together, GST and VAT collections increased from ₹6,353 crore in Aug 2025 to ₹7,534 crore in Aug 2026, an increase of ₹1,181 crore or 18.59%.

VAT collections also increased, though at a slower pace. Monthly collections also recorded a strong growth in Aug.

The sustained increase in both GST and VAT collections points to continued expansion in taxable economic activity and improved revenue mobilisation across Telangana. Growth in GST, in particular, indicates continued momentum in transactions covered under state’s indirect tax system. The commercial taxes department has also been strengthening its administrative and compliance mechanisms, with greater focus on technology-based monitoring, taxpayer services and more efficient collection processes.
