Hyderabad: Taking suo motu cognisance of media reports on the deaths of newborns in the RIMS Adilabad fire accident , the Telangana Human Rights Commission (TGHRC) on Wednesday sought a detailed report from the health department.
The commission said that it took note of reports that an electrical short circuit involving an AC unit led to the fire and dense smoke spread through the SNCU, where around 27 newborn and preterm infants were being treated. The matter has been posted for further hearing on Oct 27. The commission asked the officials to submit details on the circumstances leading to the fire, safety and maintenance arrangements at the special newborn care unit (SNCU), rescue and treatment of the affected infants and the findings of any inquiry into the incident. Five infants died, while others were shifted to nearby hospitals and wards after suffering breathing difficulties. The commission also sought details on fire alarms, firefighting equipment, emergency evacuation arrangements and electrical safety measures at the unit.
