Hyderabad : Telangana has secured central approval for five more major urban infrastructure projects worth ₹3,892 crore, including a major expansion of Hyderabad’s Godavari drinking water scheme and a city-wide flood mitigation plan for Warangal, taking the state’s total sanctioned projects under the Urban Challenge Fund (UCF) to ₹9,573 crore.

The National Apex Committee (NAC) of the Union ministry of housing and urban affairs (MoHUA), which met in New Delhi on Tuesday, approved central assistance of ₹873 crore for the five projects. With this, Telangana has secured approvals for eight projects under the UCF with total investments of ₹9,573 crore and central support of ₹2,293 crore.

The newly cleared projects include the second and third phases of the Godavari drinking water supply project for Hyderabad, comprehensive stormwater drainage improvements in Greater Warangal, restoration of the historic Warangal Fort moat, development of the Hanumakonda central business district (CBD), and an integrated heritage and tourism project at Alampur, according to the municipal administration department.

The biggest project among the new approvals is the ₹1,992 crore Godavari drinking water supply project. It envisages laying nearly 120 km of transmission pipelines from Ghanpur to the Osmansagar and Himayatsagar reservoirs and constructing two water treatment plants with capacities of 120 MLD and 70 MLD. Along with phase-I, the project is expected to augment Hyderabad’s drinking water supply by 20 tmc and meet the needs of 1.74 crore people up to 2035. The ₹1,465 crore Greater Warangal stormwater drainage project aims to tackle chronic urban flooding. Covering 407.70 sq km, the project is designed to eliminate flooding at 24 identified vulnerable locations through construction of new stormwater drains and rejuvenation of 10 major tanks. The ₹209 crore Warangal Fort moat restoration project seeks to revive the Kakatiya-era landmark through desilting, landscaping, promenades, viewing decks and bridges. Around 400 metres of the moat has already been cleared as part of the initial works. The Hanumakonda CBD project, estimated at ₹168.8 crore, will include an integrated bus terminal-cum-commercial complex, multi-level parking facilities, redevelopment of the central plaza, and infrastructure improvements around the Bhadrakali and Thousand Pillar temples. At Alampur, the ₹57.5 crore integrated heritage, tourism and urban regeneration project will upgrade infrastructure around the Jogulamba and Navabrahma temples. The plan includes improved approach roads, parking facilities, a crafts village, a sponge park, refurbishment of the Pushkara ghat and a 300-metre pedestrian heritage corridor. Under the UCF framework, central assistance is limited to 20-25% of project costs, with at least 50% of funding mobilised through public-private partnerships, hybrid annuity model arrangements or institutional borrowings.
