Kharagpur: A 24-year-old postgraduate student of IIT Kharagpur, Shyam Santosh Agrawal, died in an accident in Kure City, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan on Sunday.
Shyam, a student of the Master of Architecture programme in the department of architecture and regional planning and a resident of Lal Bahadur Shastri Hall of Residence, was in Japan for an international internship at Hiroshima University scheduled from May to Dec 2026. IIT Kharagpur director Suman Chakraborty said, “This is a deeply painful incident. We received the news this morning through his professor in Japan. We have established contact with the embassy and informed his family. IIT Kharagpur is making all necessary arrangements to bring his body back. Download the TOI App.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital following the accident but succumbed to his injuries. Hailing from Maharashtra , Shyam was remembered by faculty and peers as a promising scholar.
