Midnapore: A Jhargram court on Monday convicted eight people, including former Trinamool councillor Gauranga Pradhan, over an elderly woman’s death by burning during an alleged land-grab attempt 13 years ago. The sentences will be announced on Tuesday.
Sabitri Sarkar, a resident of Benageria, was allegedly set on fire during an altercation over an attempt to forcibly seize her land on May 28, 2013. Police named 10 accused during the investigation, all of whom were granted conditional bail. She was rescued in a critical condition but later died. Her younger son Sanjay filed a police complaint against Pradhan, then a neta of TMC’s labour wing, and others. One accused died during trial, while another was acquitted. Sarkar’s family expressed satisfaction with the verdict. She was rescued in a critical condition but later died. Second Additional District and Sessions Court convicted the remaining eight and remanded them in judicial custody.
