Kolkata: The nine-member committee drafting the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC) for Bengal will launch a website within 10 days so that people can access a Google form comprising around 30-40 questions to give their opinions. He added that the state will bring legislation to stop religious conversion after implementation of UCC. Chief minister Suvendu Adhikari said on Monday that the UCC will be implemented in the state in two-three months.
There will be around 30-40 questions: open-ended questions and opinion-based questions like whether UCC can establish equal rights in marriage and property inheritance.
“A public notice inviting public representation and the launching of the website will be done tentatively within 10 days,” a source said. A govt official said, “The questionnaire has been finalised at the meeting. Hearings for Kolkata will be held separately,” said an official. Later, the CM said, “The report of the commission will be finalised in two-three months and we will immediately convene a special session in the state assembly and will pass the same.
“During the public hearings, we will invite representations from across political parties and rights bodies. The public hearings will be held in five divisions: Presidency, Burdwan, Midnapore, Malda and Jalpaiguri. If necessary, we will arrange an overnight session; we are committed towards implementing UCC, which was in our election manifesto (Sankalp Patra).”
