The body of Brishti Mukherjee, a distant niece of Mamata Banerjee, was recovered from her father’s home in Rampurhat.
SURI: The body of 28-year-old Brishti Mukherjee, a distant niece of former Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee , was recovered from her father’s residence in Rampurhat’s Nischintapur on Tuesday. Brishti was the daughter of Nihar Ranjan Mukherjee, Mamata’s maternal cousin and a former Trinamool block president of Rampurhat-1. She was found hanging from a ceiling fan with a white dhoti tied around her neck at the house in Kusumba village.
Family members said Brishti, mother of a 12-year-old child, had been residing at her father’s house for two years. Brishti worked as a non-teaching Group-C staffer at Bolpur High School until her appointment was cancelled in March 2023 following a Calcutta high court order regarding irregularities in the SSC recruitment process. Investigators suspect Brishti died by suicide due to personal distress, though senior officers said any conclusion regarding the exact cause of death would depend on the postmortem report.

They said she was battling depression and was under treatment for several years. Brishti was experiencing personal and professional stress, including ongoing divorce proceedings, according to relatives. Family sources said she had submitted her resignation prior to the official termination order. Brishti’s family members are being questioned, police said.
