Investigators reviewed footage from approximately 60-odd CCTV cameras installed around the Gariahat flyover, AJC Bose Road flyover and Maa flyover adjacent arterial routes within hours. Tracking the vehicle’s movement along EM Bypass, officers observed the taxi heading toward Baruipur-Joynagar in the South 24 Parganas district. Surveillance footage captured a suspicious car, though deciphering the licence registration plate proved difficult due to image quality.

Preliminary interrogations revealed that Madhu was childless, leading investigators to examine whether personal desperation for a child drove the crime. The grieving mother informed the police at the crossing and cops and local residents launched an immediate search. A taxi driver too has been arrested. The arrested are Gariahat footpath dweller Bandana Rai, believed to be the tipper and Madhu Sheikh of Baruipur, the main accused. The cops identified the yellow taxi driver as Mithun Paswan. Police are also probing potential ties to an organized child-trafficking syndicate and investigating if the accused intended to sell the infant to prospective buyers where Bandana acted as the tipper. The distraught parents lodged a complaint with Beniapukur PS, prompting Kolkata Police to launch a high-priority search operation. Coordinating with Bengal Police, Kolkata Police established that the taxi had transported the two women to Bakultala, a remote area in Joynagar. Police teams rushed to the location, gathered local intelligence, and executed an early morning raid.
