His family alleged his former girlfriend, a lawyer, accompanied by police, had threatened Anirban with dire consequences during a confrontation over a dispute arising from their relationship. Kolkata: A civic volunteer attached to the Duttapukur PS, Anirban Basu, was found hanging at his home in Duttapukur early on Friday.
“Cops found a suicide note that named several people, including a few civic volunteers and a woman lawyer, whom he held responsible for his decision to end his life,” a senior Barasat District Police officer said.
Anirban’s relationship with the woman had recently ended, according to a family member. “Ever since the break-up, the woman had been threatening Anirban and trying to implicate him in false cases, causing him severe mental distress,” the relative said.
When the door was opened, we found him hanging inside,” she said. Anirban’s mother, Kalpana, claimed a team of Duttapukur cops and a few civic volunteers, arrived at their home. “They made us open the gate and also, Anirban’s room. Alleging her son was subjected to sustained mental harassment, she demanded a thorough investigation, identification of those responsible and stringent punishment. “An unnatural death case has been registered. Those named in the note are also being checked and we are questioning people,” the officer added.
