Kolkata: Chief minister Suvendu Adhikari on Thursday announced his govt’s plans to take Gangasagar Mela international, warning that those who “insult Ram” will face the people’s verdict. “We have already started preparations to give Gangasagar Mela, scheduled for Jan, an international profile,” Adhikari said at a Ram Katha programme in Kolkata. Accusing the erstwhile Left Front and Trinamool Congress govts of Kolkata’s cultural decline, he declared “anti-national slogans” would not be tolerated.
He noted the 1950 Cattle Act has been enforced for cow protection and warned that govt would not spare anyone involved in crimes against women.
“Those who insult Ram will be taught a lesson by the people,” Adhikari said. Warning “appeasement politics” would end, he said govt had stopped imam allowances. We have been providing land to BSF to secure the border,” he said.
Without naming former chief minister Mamata Banerjee, he referred to a counter-procession on the day the Ram temple in Ayodhya was inaugurated, citing the Bhowanipore election as proof of response from the Sanatani electorate.
