Kolkata: State labour minister Arjun Singh sparked controversy with remarks targeting Left and ultra-Left groups, saying “carbolic acid” should be used to drive out “anti-national elements”.
Addressing a party workers’ meeting at Panpur More in Kankinara, North 24-Parganas on Tuesday, Singh said CM Suvendu Adhikari is a “very good person” who was seeking a solution through legal means. However, he claimed there was “no other way to deal with anti-nationals except carbolic acid and blackout”. Apart from carbolic acid and a blackout, there is no other way to deal with anti-national elements,” Singh said.

Targeting Left and ultra-Left groups, Singh alleged they did not respect their parents but instead “chant slogans in praise of Karl Marx and Lenin”. Singh had made a similar remark on Monday, claiming that if given two hours, he could “blackout” and “wipe out” ultra-Left groups from Bengal. CPM functionary and former MLA Manash Mukherjee told TOI, “Such nonsensical statements are not being made only by Arjun Singh, all BJP netas and ministers, and even the CM, have been making similar remarks.
He added, “Those who raise anti-national slogans will not listen easily. Carbolic acid will be needed for them. Just as snakes flee when carbolic acid is used, ultra-Left elements will also flee. These are nothing but the ramblings of a madman. No one has ever been able to suppress the movements of Leftists or Communists with such threats, and neither will they be able to do so.
