Kolkata: Students in classes 5 to 8 across state-run schools in West Bengal will soon learn coding, robotics, python, and information technology. The state govt will also provide third-language textbooks for Hindi, Sanskrit, and Arabic for classes 7 and 8 free of cost, saving students from purchasing them from the open market. State school education minister Dipak Barman stated that a new subject, ‘Information and Communication Technology (ICT)’, will be introduced from the upcoming academic session.
Members of the state syllabus committee highlighted that the new curriculum brings state schools on a par with central boards like CBSE and CISCE, which have already integrated these tech modules into their academic frameworks.
Barman said, “A new subject is to be introduced that includes Robotics, Coding, Python, and Information Technology.
However, school heads have expressed concern regarding the shortage of specialised teachers to conduct classes. ”When the Higher Secondary Council introduced AI and data science a few years ago, we were excited, but a shortage of trained teachers meant computer science staff had to cover those classes,” said one school headmaster. “If the same happens at the upper primary level, managing these classes effectively will be a challenge. ” Books will be distributed along with a structured syllabus during the January session, alongside other core textbooks.
