Kolkata: The state on Thursday appealed against a Calcutta High Court single bench order allowing Trinamool neta Asit Mazumdar to hold a meeting in Serampore on Friday, to be attended by ex-CM Mamata Banerjee . Hon’ble CJ will hear it on Friday.
Mazumdar had sought to conduct a rally with 5,000 participants from maidan to Serampore court. This was opposed by additional advocate general Billwadal Bhattacharya, who submitted that the proposed route on GT Road would lead to problems for multiple essential establishments there, like a hospital and five schools. He proposed that the rally be conducted on Delhi Road. Senior advocate Kalyan Bandopadhyay, representing Mazumdar, submitted that all parties were allowed to hold rallies on that road and it only became a problem when it was a rally by the Mamata Banerjee faction of TMC. Advocate Sirsanya Bandopadhyay highlighted the programme held by CM Suvendu Adhikari from Dhakuria to Jadavpur 8B in the middle of a work day.
