Kolkata: There are a total of 33 cases against Asim Mondal, the Maoist top gun arrested by Kolkata Police STF on Thursday, police sources said a day after his arrest. The 64-year-old Maoist organiser, who also goes by the names Akash and Timir, has been sent to police custody till Sept 29. His lawyer, Yasin Rahman, argued that the accusations against Mondal had existed for decades, adding that before 2011, there were others linked to similar networks who later went on to become mainstream politicians. Police alleged Mondal was involved in multiple attacks in Jhargram, West Midnapore and Bankura in 2009-10. They added that after Kishenji died in 2011, Mondal remained active in forests, especially around East Singbhum in Jharkhand. Mondal evaded arrest for over 15 years even as he was being tracked by central and state agencies, according to cops.

STF sources said information obtained from a Maoist arrested recently aided Mondal’s arrest. Mondal did not move for bail. Download the TOI App.

The public prosecutor said in court on Friday that Mondal faces cases across Bengal, Jharkhand and Odisha , including charges under UAPA.
