Kolkata : In a major push toward administrative transparency using technology, Lalbazar has introduced a new internal mobile application aimed at curbing absenteeism and ensuring timely deployment of personnel during law-and-order duties across the city.
Upon arriving at their assigned post, KP personnel are required to upload a live geotagged photograph via the application after clicking their selfie. The system automatically records the precise timestamp and GPS location, serving as verified digital proof that the officer has assumed responsibility at the scheduled time and location. The dedicated app, named ‘Mitron’, has been developed to digitise duty rosters, monitor real-time attendance, and overhaul the force’s traditional deployment management system. The initiative follows persistent complaints regarding operational delays, where policemen assigned to handle major events, public demonstrations, and citywide security gatherings either arrived late at designated spots or remained absent altogether despite being marked present on paper. Under existing procedures, police station divisions submit personnel lists to Lalbazar, where deployment decisions are finalised. However, tracking individual compliance on the ground proved difficult. Personnel frequently cited delayed notifications from local police stations to justify late arrivals, creating severe operational bottlenecks for field commanders attempting to organise personnel during critical situations. To eliminate these logistical loopholes, the ‘Mitron’ app digitises the entire deployment pipeline. Through the digital interface, officers-in-charge (OCs) of local police stations can directly upload duty assignments and issue real-time deployment directives to subordinate officers. The Kolkata Police administration is currently conducting trial runs of the app across all ranks. Senior officials at Lalbazar expressed confidence that the tracking mechanism will enforce strict discipline, eradicate duty evasion, and significantly streamline police operations across all divisions. If the trial phase yields satisfactory results, officials plan to deploy the ‘Mitron’ app permanently across the entire city police establishment ahead of the upcoming Durga Puja festival, ensuring maximum operational readiness and heightened security during the city’s largest annual public gathering.
