A 44-year-old local was allegedly beaten with iron rods and wooden sticks after refusing to yield to an extortion demand following a localised dispute. Kolkata : Cops have launched a probe following a violent assault and extortion attempt within the Karaya Police Station limits on Sunday afternoon.
The incident occurred around 3.15 pm when the victim was returning home, according to the FIR and the official complaint filed with Gariahat Police.
The victim declined and said the materials were positioned entirely within his private property boundaries. The primary assailant reportedly intercepted him and demanded he remove several construction materials kept near the boundary wall of his premises.
The complainant claimed he had previously transferred Rs 1.3 lakh to the primary suspect’s father. However, the suspect insisted on an additional payment of Rs 1 lakh on the spot. During the attack, the victim’s gold chain, valued at Rs 3 lakh, was broken and disappeared.
The victim said he suspects the assailants stole his jewellery. The argument escalated into financial coercion. When the victim refused, the assailant allegedly called four associates to the spot. Locals, alerted by the commotion, managed to rescue the victim and the assailants fled.
