An area in Sinthee, Kolkata where one of the incidents took place
Kolkata: Three cases of violence have been reported from Chitpur, Sinthee and Haridevpur in the past 72 hours in connection with immersion of Ganesh and Vishwakarma idols. Ternsion gripped the Birpara area under Chitpur Police Station, after a 65-year-old resident protested against blaring of loudspeakers and amplified microphones even after 11 pm.
Police said the man’s repeated requests to the organisers were ignored. Four persons have been arrested in these cases so far. Later, a heated altercation broke out. Two persons, Utpal Ghosh and Chandraprakash Bulgatia, were arrested from Birpara area. Police have arrested Bhowmik. Sumantra Dey, local BJP Yuva Mandal president, along with associate Amit Dey, filed a complaint with Sinthee police. The miscreants had allegedly assaulted Dey and snatched his gold chain. An app-cab driver, Amit Ghosh, allegedly pulled out an illegal firearm, waved it openly to intimidate the crowd, and used the weapon’s butt to assault members of the other group. Several were injured and women alleged molestation. Haridevpur police brought the situation under control. Ghosh was later arrested. In all these cases, police have also detained others.
Locals said some puja committee members assaulted the senior citizen, who was rushed to a hospital on Saturday night. The victim lodged a complaint at Chitpur Police Station on Sunday. A group of drunk bikers, Sandip Bhowmik, Bhola Das, and Swarup Sarkar, harassed women visiting a Ganesh Puja pandal near Jamrul Tala Crossing in Sinthee on Saturday. At Jorapukur Ghat in Haridevpur, a clash broke out between two groups on Saturday over Ganesh idol immersion.
