Kolkata: Visitors to Chandernagore’s famous Jagaddhatri Puja may soon be able to combine a cruise on the Hooghly with pandal-hopping, with the state govt planning special river cruise packages from Babughat to Chandernagore. A ferry service between Chandernagore and Bhadreswar is also being planned as part of a series of initiatives to improve visitor access to the historic town during the festival. The tourism-focused initiatives are among several arrangements being worked out by the state govt for this year’s Jagaddhatri Puja. Special arrangements are also being planned for senior citizens who find it difficult to negotiate crowded streets and narrow lanes. Under the proposal, elderly visitors will be taken from designated points to selected pandals for darshan and dropped back at the same locations. The administration is also planning a dedicated mobile application carrying information on puja pandals, route maps, traffic updates, available services and emergency helpline numbers to help visitors navigate the town. Crowd management and emergency medical response will remain key priorities, particularly following the recent stampede at a Durga Puja pandal in Kolkata’s Chorbagan. The district administration is considering deployment of bike ambulances to reach visitors who fall ill in congested and inaccessible lanes. Chinsurah and Chandernagore hospitals will also be kept prepared, while medical assistance booths are being planned at strategic locations. The administration is also looking at improving access to river ghats and roads and setting up welcome gates for visitors. Security arrangements will extend to immersion processions as well, with officials asked to ensure orderly movement, adherence to schedules and adequate surveillance at the ghats. The180-odd puja organisers have been urged to ensure smaller entry points and wider exit routes to facilitate crowd movement.
