Kolkata : Kolkata Police commissioner Ajay Nand has directed all officers-in-charge across the city to ensure dedicated bike patrol units and at least two patrolling teams remain on standby at every police station to respond to Dial 112 emergency calls in the quickest possible time.
If the situation involves a major crime or severe disruption, the first-responding team will immediately inform senior police station officials so that a larger contingent of force can be dispatched as reinforcement. In cases where the primary bike team is tied up handling an ongoing emergency and a secondary incident is reported, the backup patrol team, recently equipped with new motorcycles, will immediately be deployed to the second location. The directive from Lalbazar emphasises the critical necessity of an immediate police presence at crime scenes or emergency spots following a distress alert. Under the refined operational protocol, as soon as a control room message is relayed to a police station, the duty officer and desk personnel will instantly alert motorcycle patrol teams, instructing them to reach the location in the shortest time frame feasible. Upon arrival, the initial bike unit will attempt to manage and de-escalate immediate situations on the spot. To maintain seamless coverage across all jurisdictions—including large police divisions such as Jadavpur, Behala, and parts of Bhangar division—Lalbazar has mandated that a second backup motorcycle team must always be kept ready at the station. Furthermore, the police administration has established a real-time coordination mechanism with traffic authorities to prevent delays caused by urban congestion. If a motorcycle response team encounters heavy traffic while en route to a distress location, the local police station will immediately alert the Traffic Control Room and the traffic guard concerned. Traffic personnel will then clear the route ahead to allow smooth, uninterrupted passage for the emergency response teams, ensuring law enforcement reaches incident spots without delay.
