Mumbai: More cases were registered against drunk drivers by the police in the first nine months of this year as compared to entire 2025. The traffic police department got 5,181 offences registered against drunk drivers in Jan-Sept 2026, as compared to 3,728 offences in 2025. Regional Transport Offices (RTOs) have suspended the driving licences of 2,399 offenders based on proposals made by the traffic department.
Police said strict action will deter motorists from getting behind the wheel inebriated. Drunk driving is one of the key causes of road crashes.
The 44-year-old constable Ashok Borude’s jaw got stuck in the rear glass of the SUV due to the impact and he had to be given 15 stitches on his lower jaw and forehead. In Feb this year, an inebriated motorist was arrested for ramming his car into a stationary police forensic van near Dahisar police station gate, before hitting a parked bike and crashing into the divider. The road crash led to an electricity box getting damaged, impacting power supply to the police station and a neighbouring locality. Police continually shoulder the risks associated with intoxicated motorists. In July, an inebriated executive drove his SUV at high speed to evade a drunk-driving check on Khar Linking Road and ended up crashing into a police patrolling bike, injuring a constable.
He has to appear before court. If the case is chargesheeted, it goes to trial where evidence in the form of a breathalyser report can be produced. Registration of an FIR can impact the offender’s employment prospects.
