Film City flyover fills a key GMLR gap

The four-lane bridge replaces the 110-year-old unsafe structure and is targeted to open by October 15. Built at approximately Rs 50 crore, the replacement Sion bridge will provide four lanes with greater clearance over the railway tracks. Targeted to open on October 15, the four-lane bridge will cross seven railway lines and feature a 99.34m steel girder weighing 1,100 tonnes The Vidyavihar bridge will bypass congestion around Ghatkopar and the Kurla-Chembur-Santacruz Link Road. The East-West journey, currently taking around 30-45 minutes, is expected to fall to less than five minutes. Costing more than Rs 200 crore, the bridge will also divert traffic from crowded station approach roads and provide a direct route to Somaiya Vidyavihar. The Rs 389-crore Mahalaxmi Cable-Stayed Bridge is targeted for completion by December 2026. The four-lane, 803m structure will replace a 90-year-old unsafe bridge and connect Keshavrao Khadye Marg/Dr E Moses Road with major corridors including the Mumbai Coastal Road and Sewri-Worli Connector, easing the bottleneck around Saat Rasta and Jacob Circle. The 1.26-km GMLR Film City Flyover, costing Rs 300 crore, will connect Dindoshi with Film City in Goregaon East. Targeted to open on October 15, it forms a key section of the 12.2-km Goregaon-Mulund Link Road project.

The new Sion Railway Overbridge will reconnect Sion East and Sion West, linking the Eastern Express Highway, Kurla and the Dharavi-Mahim-Bandra side. Its increased clearance will also enable the 5th and 6th railway tracks between CSMT and Kurla. The old bridge had weight restrictions that limited heavy vehicles and BEST buses. The new structure will restore a vital East-West link and reduce pressure on alternative routes through Matunga, Dharavi and Kurla. The Vidyavihar East-West Railway Overbridge will directly connect Lal Bahadur Shastri Marg in Vidyavihar West with the Eastern Express Highway in Vidyavihar East. The elevated corridor will take traffic off congested surface roads and improve East-West movement between Goregaon and Mulund.
