Bengaluru: A 59-year-old doctor lost Rs 99,000 to fraudsters after searching for a taxi aggregator’s customer care number online to claim refund for excess payment made while booking an autorickshaw. Dr Sharadha (name changed), a resident of Kacharakanahalli in HRBR Layout, told police she booked an auto through the taxi aggregator app on the night of Oct 27 and made an online payment. In panic, she searched online for the customer care number and found a random one (+ 91 6352361627) on one of the webpages. After some time, unidentified fraudsters siphoned off Rs 99,000 from her account through PhonePe.

After Sharadha explained her problem, he told her she needed to download an application called “customer support 24×7” to process the refund. The fraudsters tricked her into downloading a fake customer support app, following which money was siphoned off from her bank account through a digital payment application. She later realised she had paid more than the required fare. She called the number but the call went unanswered. Subsequently, an unidentified person contacted her through WhatsApp and claimed to be a representative of the aggregator firm. Trusting the instructions, Sharadha downloaded the app. Download the TOI App.
