He said residents had named the circle after Rani Chennamma years ago and had spent their own money to build it even during the NH construction. Calling the overnight attempt to remove the statue “the height of foolishness,” he said it insulted a queen who fought for India’s freedom and brought disgrace to govt. “The protest would continue until senior district-level officers reached the site,” he warned.
Gadag: Gajendragad town in Gadag district witnessed tense scenes Sunday after members of the public staged a protest against the taluk administration’s attempt to remove the newly installed statue of Veerarani Kittur Chennamma at Chennamma Circle, on the NH stretch from Kushtagi Road toward Yelburga. Hundreds of residents and community leaders gathered at Chennamma Circle. Protesters, including TS Rajur, Basavaraj Purtageri, Umesh Mallapur, Shivaraj Bandi and others, remained at the spot, awaiting the assistant commissioner’s evening visit. The agitation continued.
