Belagavi : District minister Satish Jarkiholi has directed officials to use water available in reservoirs across the district judiciously and give priority to drinking water requirements amid the prevailing drought .
Roshan said instructions had been issued to disconnect power connections along riverbanks during canal releases and prevent unauthorised lifting of irrigation water through pump sets. He directed the irrigation department to continuously monitor reservoir storage and consumption, saying adequate water must be reserved for drinking even while meeting irrigation requirements. Jarkiholi instructed Hescom and irrigation department officials to regularly brief local MLAs about water availability, irrigation arrangements and power supply in their constituencies. He stressed coordination with elected representatives over water distribution, canal releases and farmers’ concerns. Officials were directed to ensure equitable distribution, particularly to tail-end farmers. Bilgi MLA J T Patil sought measures to prevent unauthorised use of electricity along canal routes during water releases, saying such activities could hamper water flow and deprive tail-end farmers. He also cautioned against excessive use of canal water in upper reaches and suggested regulating power supply along canal stretches wherever necessary. Deputy commissioner Mohammad Roshan directed officials to plug canal leakages and minimise wastage, with repair and maintenance works to be completed by the end of October. He called for coordination among departments to ensure efficient water management and adequate supply to tail-end areas.
Chairing the Ghataprabha Irrigation Advisory Committee meeting at the deputy commissioner’s office on Monday, Jarkiholi asked officials to take precautionary measures to prevent drinking water shortages for people and livestock.
