EC guidelines mandate certification of campaign ads

The emergence of CCTV footage has added a fresh dimension to the case

Dharwad : The Media Certification and Monitoring Committee (MCMC) will monitor election advertisements and campaign material during the Karnataka West Graduates’ Constituency election, for which the Model Code of Conduct has been in force since Sept 22, 2026.

Political parties, candidates and advertisers have been directed to obtain pre-certification from the committee before releasing or broadcasting any election-related advertisement, the additional deputy commissioner said. In a press release, the additional deputy commissioner stated that, in accordance with the Election Commission of India ’s guidelines, prior certification is mandatory for all election campaign advertisements to be broadcast or displayed on television channels, cable networks, radio, private FM channels, cinema theatres, public audio-visual displays, and social media. The requirement also applies to bulk SMS messages and recorded voice calls used for election campaigning. The legal provisions and election guidelines governing electronic media advertisements are equally applicable to such campaign communications. The MCMC will closely monitor the campaign activities of political leaders and candidates during the election period to ensure compliance with the Model Code of Conduct.
