MLA Manthar Gowda inaugurated the reopening
Madikeri : The Dubare Elephant Camp, which was shut after a tourist died after being caught under an elephant during a fight between two trained elephants in Kodagu district in May 2026, has been opened to tourists on Sunday. “Initially, tourists will be allowed to visit the camp for two hours daily, from 9.30am. A maximum of 150 tourists will be permitted per batch, and they will be escorted into the camp in groups,” he said. He said that, for now, tourists will only be able to view the 10 elephants currently housed at the camp.

Before reopening, the camp near Kushalnagar has implemented safety guidelines to be followed at elephant camps. Madikeri MLA Manthar Gowda inaugurated the reopening by distributing tickets to tourists at the camp’s reception centre. He urged tourists and the general public to strictly adhere to the department’s guidelines to prevent any untoward incidents in the future. V Abhishek, deputy conservator of forests (Madikeri Division), stated that all necessary safety measures have been implemented before opening the camp to the public. Tourist entry to the camp is restricted on Tuesdays, a day dedicated to maintenance and related activities. He added that the duration of tourist visits might be extended in the future after assessing the situation. Download the TOI App.
Speaking on the occasion, he noted that govt and forest department have formulated necessary safety measures in the wake of an unfortunate incident that previously occurred at the camp.
