The SICU will facilitate intensive pre-operative monitoring of patients requiring critical care

Mysuru: District Hospital on KRS Road has launched a dedicated 16-bed surgical intensive care unit (SICU) to provide specialised post-operative care for patients undergoing major and high-risk surgeries. The hospital is also set to add a 12-bed high-dependency unit (HDU), further strengthening its critical care infrastructure. It already has a 14-bed general intensive care unit (ICU). The district hospital performs between six and 10 surgeries daily, including a significant number of high-risk pregnancy cases referred from across the region.

District surgeon Dr S Chidambara said the SICU comprises separate eight-bed wards for men and women. “The new facility became operational on Friday,” Dr Chidambara said. “The number of surgeries varies from day to day,” he said. Dr Chidambara said the hospital has also begun performing laparoscopic tubectomy procedures, particularly in complicated and high-risk cases, as it has ICU support. “Cases referred from other health facilities are now being handled here,” he added. Praising the hospital’s services, Muhammad Pasha, a resident of Metagalli, said the institution was quietly transforming public healthcare delivery. Public healthcare institutions are invaluable assets to society, especially at a time when medical treatment in the private sector is becoming increasingly expensive,” he said.

The new SICU will enable surgeons to closely monitor patients after surgery with the support of a specialised nursing team. It will also facilitate intensive pre-operative monitoring of patients requiring critical care. “I have been visiting the hospital for the past two years and have seen a marked improvement in the quality of care. The govt should continue supporting the hospital with adequate funding and staff.
