Bengaluru: A theatrical performance titled The Truth Behind Freedom Fighter Mahatma Gandhi ’s Assassination sparked a controversy at Suchitra Cinema and Cultural Academy in Banashankari after former Mysuru Rangayana director Addanda Cariappa allegedly had ink smeared on his face during a confrontation with Congress workers. Two counter-complaints were filed at Banashankari police station. Organised by Kodagu Rangabhoomi Trust and directed by Cariappa, the play came under fire from Congress workers and members of various organisations over alleged objectionable remarks about Mahatma Gandhi. In a complaint, a Congress worker alleged the play spread misinformation about Gandhi’s assassination and portrayed him as anti-national. The protesters also accused Cariappa of blaming Gandhi and Congress for the Partition of India. Protesters entered the academy and confronted the organisers. A heated exchange followed, during which Cariappa was allegedly manhandled. The complainants also alleged that tickets for the play had been sold on the black market in Mysuru and that those who questioned the alleged irregularities were verbally abused. They sought action against Cariappa and the performers. In his counter-complaint, Cariappa alleged the protesters disrupted the performance, assaulted him and threatened to kill him. He maintained that the play was based on references from books. Banashankari police registered both complaints as non-cognisable reports (NCRs). Police turned them away, assuring them that necessary action would be taken. Download the TOI App.
