Davanagere : A bandh called by the Areca Growers’ Federation against the ban on gutka containing tobacco and nicotine and the release of water from the Bhadra reservoir into the Bhadra Upper Canal evoked a mixed response in Davanagere on Tuesday.
Former minister MP Renukacharya led a two-wheeler rally through key roads. Protesters burned tyres at several junctions and raised slogans against the state govt, demanding withdrawal of the gutka ban and cancellation of the order releasing three tmcft of water to the Bhadra Upper Canal. Tension briefly prevailed at Jayadeva Circle when police attempted to remove burning tyres. A standoff ensued before officers extinguished the flames. Protesters also stopped a Channagiri-Davanagere bus and urged drivers not to operate services. Near Vani Rice Mill, they warned bus drivers against taking vehicles onto the roads. Police intervened and cautioned protesters against forcibly enforcing the shutdown.
