EFFICIENT SYSTEM: City’s new auto-tippers help keep Raichur cleaner and greener
Raichur : A Rs 4.4-crore investment in 34 new auto tippers has strengthened Raichur City Corporation’s garbage collection system, and the civic body is also revamping its collection mechanism to improve coverage and ensure quicker responses to vehicle breakdowns. The addition has increased the corporation’s garbage collection fleet to 96 vehicles, enabling door-to-door collection of wet and dry waste in all wards, including narrow lanes. The new vehicles, inaugurated on Aug 15, were purchased using the balance grant under the 15 th Finance Commission for 2021-22.
The fleet expansion comes amid rising waste generation due to population growth and a shortage of collection vehicles. To avoid disruptions, the corporation has introduced a backup system under which an alternative vehicle is deployed immediately when a vehicle breaks down.
“Steps are being taken in phases to make Raichur a garbage-free city,” said city corporation environmental engineer Munaf Patel , adding that the 34 new auto tippers will be operated by outsourced drivers. Several older vehicles had become unreliable after years of continuous use, leading to delays and complaints from residents. The corporation is gradually phasing out ageing vehicles and replacing them with new ones as part of its efforts to make Raichur a garbage-free city.
