J Kariyappa Malige opens the Kanaka Samskruti Rejuvenation Camp in Chitradurga

Chitradurga : Social media is eroding students’ reading, writing and communication skills, and youngsters should turn to literature to develop human values and critical thinking, said J Kariyappa Malige, district coordinator of Santakavi Kanakadasa Study Centre. Malige said vachanas, kirtanas and tatvapadas embody a love for life, while the study centre works across Karnataka to promote rational thinking and human values among students. Tatvapada composers considered the body a temple and the soul divine, and used their works to challenge social inequalities and sow the seeds of rational thought, he said.

He was speaking after inaugurating the Kanaka Samskruti Rejuvenation Camp, organised by the Kannada and culture department and the study centre at Govt Arts College here. Vachanas, kirtanas and tatvapadas were not merely literary forms but social and cultural movements, he added. Principal R Tarini Shubhadayini, professor HG Vijayakumar, study centre director Satyanarayana, Kannada postgraduate department head K Chittayya and others were present.
