Stray pigs roam on busy streets of Davanagere, highlighting urban wildlife management and public safety concerns
Davanagere : With pigs increasingly roaming residential layouts, market areas and traffic circles, the Davanagere City Corporation (DCC) has extended the deadline till Aug 31 for pig owners to voluntarily capture and relocate their animals to suitable rearing spaces outside municipal limits. Clarifying that the corporation is not opposed to pig rearing as a livelihood, he said the activity can continue on private land outside city limits under hygienic conditions. “Releasing pigs onto public streets cannot be tolerated,” he said. The DCC has said enforcement action will begin immediately after the deadline if owners fail to comply.
The civic body has warned that pigs found on city streets after the deadline will be seized and shifted. The decision comes in response to a growing number of complaints from residents, many of whom submitted photographs showing pigs moving through neighbourhoods, obstructing roads and creating unhygienic conditions. Residents say pigs frequently enter drains, vacant sites and residential areas, creating sanitation issues and posing a risk to motorists. Mahanthesh asked.
