The critical care block under construction at KMC-RI, Hubballi
The new G+2 facility, being built at a cost of Rs 6.5 crore through joint funding from the Union and state governments, aims to streamline emergency and trauma care services.
He said the new facility will primarily cater to major trauma and accident victims, including patients with head injuries, chest injuries and fractures. “I have inspected the work several times and instructed officials to complete it at the earliest,” he said. Dr Ishwar Hasabi, superintendent of KMC-RI, said the block will be highly beneficial for high-risk patients, with all facilities required for emergency treatment available under one roof.
A dedicated team comprising a neurosurgeon, an orthopaedic specialist and a general surgeon will be available in the unit. The block will also house an operation theatre and intensive care facilities.
The 60-bed ICU is expected to benefit hundreds of patients from across North Karnataka. Construction of the G+2 building, launched in August 2025 with funds from the Union and state governments, has now been intensified. KMC-RI already provides specialised treatment for emergency patients and currently has around 300 ICU beds, including medical ICU (M-ICU), surgical ICU (S-ICU) and neonatal ICU (NICU) facilities. Hundreds of patients from seven to eight districts depend on the hospital, while 1,500 to 2,000 people visit its outpatient department every day for medical services.
Hubballi : Construction of the critical care block (CCB), which will house an intensive care unit at Karnataka Medical College-Research Institute (KMC-RI), is progressing rapidly and is expected to be completed within the next five months. The facility will cater to all departments of the hospital and provide advanced critical care to patients. The number of emergency cases arriving at the hospital from various places has been steadily increasing. Once operational, the block is expected to significantly reduce the burden on KMC-RI’s existing ICU infrastructure, strengthening critical care services for patients across North Karnataka.
