Bengaluru: That Church Street is built for leisurely strolls, café-hopping and soaking in the city’s street life, and not for heavy garbage trucks rumbling through its cobblestone stretch became clear Monday. Two waste collection compactors entered the road early Monday, leaving a portion of its carefully laid surface caved in and a sinkhole in its wake. The damaged portion was repaired by Bengaluru Central City Corporation (BCCC) soon after the compactors were removed, with workers filling the sinkhole and laying fresh cobblestones. The road surface was restored by evening. The incident has raised questions about how heavy vehicles were allowed onto a stretch where restrictions are meant to protect the road’s specially designed surface. The road has since become a popular destination for pedestrians, with its cafés, restaurants and shops drawing visitors through the day and into the evening. Download the TOI App.
The road is designed only for vehicles weighing up to 10 tonnes. Because its surface is not designed to withstand such loads, atif Mohammed, BCCC executive engineer of the Shantinagar division, told TOI that heavy vehicles, including garbage compactors, are prohibited on Church Street.
We have immediately rectified the damage,” he said. “The driver and Bengaluru Solid Waste Management Ltd assistant general manager were both unaware of the restriction.
