Storm brewing: BCC office, Belagavi
Belagavi : The state govt has sought an action taken report from the Belagavi City Corporation (BCC) on its Aug 29 directive to adopt a pro-Karnataka resolution, amid ongoing protests by various Kannada organisations over the past five months.
The department directed the BCC commissioner to submit a report on the action initiated in compliance with the govt order issued on Aug 29. The communication was routed through the Directorate of Municipal Administration on Sept 17. In a parallel development, the Belagavi regional commissioner wrote to the BCC commissioner on Sept 19, seeking details on the implementation of the govt order and calling for a status report. The Aug 29 directive instructed the BCC to adopt a resolution in line with one passed by the Karnataka Legislative Assembly on March 23, 1988. Earlier, on Sept 4, the director of municipal administration issued a follow-up communication referring to a report submitted by the Belagavi deputy commissioner on July 6.

The Assembly resolution had declared the Mahajan Commission Report as final on the long-standing Karnataka-Maharashtra border dispute. The communication reiterated that the city corporation should adopt a resolution in accordance with the Karnataka legislature’s position that the Mahajan Commission Report is final and binding. With repeated directions from the state govt and senior administrative authorities, pressure is mounting on the BCC to act on the matter and submit a compliance report. The latest developments come amid continuing protests and demands by pro-Kannada organisations, which have been campaigning for the civic body to adopt a Karnataka-backed resolution on the border issue.
