The PHC is expected to benefit residents of 15 tribal hamlets around Gopinatham, who currently travel between 50km and 150km for emergency medical care at hospitals near Mettur in Tamil Nadu and at Kollegal and Mysuru in Karnataka. Because of delays in constructing the hospital, nearly 10,000 people in Gopinatham gram panchayat and adjoining tribal hamlets have long lacked local medical facilities.
The two-storied hospital building is expected to be completed by the end of March next year, said public works department assistant executive engineer Chinnanna. Residents of the region had been demanding a govt hospital for the past seven decades. The new PHC will house an auditorium, enquiry chamber, outpatient ward, injection room, laboratory, doctors’ chambers, pharmacy unit, warehouse, separate wards for men and women, a preparation ward, minor operation theatre, toilets, borewell, generator, UPS, solar facility and overhead tank, among other facilities.
