Kolhapur : A 25-year-old man has been arrested for the alleged murder of a 23-year-old engineering student whose body was found nearly 1,000ft deep in a valley below Bhudargad’s Naikwadi waterfall. Police initially registered a case under BNS section 140(3) (wrongful confinement). They added that her marriage had been fixed for Nov 12.

Locals said Tarrannum lived with her maternal grandmother in the town’s Shivajinagar area and returned home only during vacations while pursuing her studies. Police have also seized the mobile phones of both Tarrannum and the accused for forensic analysis. The case sparked outrage in Gargoti.

The case surfaced on Saturday morning when Sripad walked into a police station and reported Tarrannum’s death. A local court on Sunday remanded Sripad in five days of police custody. Residents marched to the police station on Sunday and demanded a fast-track trial.

Because her family had fixed her marriage elsewhere, he told us they had been in a relationship for five-and-a-half years and were distressed. He claimed she jumped into the valley, but he lost his nerve at the last moment,” said Vivek Patil, sub-divisional police officer, Gadhinglaj.

The couple had decided to die by suicide together, according to him. The victim, Tarrannum Naik, was a third-year engineering student from Gargoti. The accused, Sripad Vadar, is also from the town and works whih his brother, a local contractor. We deployed a rescue team and recovered her body.

“On Saturday morning, Sripad walked into the local police station and reported that the young woman had fallen into the valley from a cliff.

However, the investigation took a different turn after they examined chats exchanged between the two.
