Akola : Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Monday seized around 1,900 kg of khowa, valued at nearly Rs5 lakh, which was being brought to Akola from Ahmedabad in Gujarat allegedly in an unhygienic manner ahead of the festive season.

Officials said preliminary information gathered during the action indicated links to Akola-based traders. Acting on a tip-off, an FDA team intercepted and inspected the consignment and seized the entire stock. The exact role of the persons associated with the consignment is being verified. The seizure assumes significance as demand for khowa and other milk-based products rises sharply during the festive season. FDA officials are now investigating the source of the khowa, the conditions in which it was transported, its intended destination and whether it met food safety and hygiene standards. Officials have urged consumers to exercise caution while purchasing khowa, sweets and other perishable food products. Download the TOI App.
