Grain ATM to be launched by supply department in Nashik
That routine could soon change in Nashik. In a first-of-its-kind initiative in Maharashtra , an automatic grain dispensing machine is expected to start functioning at Nashik Road by mid-Oct. Think of it as an ATM for foodgrain. Authenticate yourself, place your bag and collect your quota. The food and civil supplies department is setting up the facility on a pilot basis at the old govt foodgrain warehouse at Nashik Road. Nagpur is also among the state’s pioneer centres selected for the experiment. The facility will cater to beneficiaries under the Antyodaya Anna Yojana and Priority Household schemes. Migrant workers covered by the One Nation One Ration Card system can also use it, removing geographical restrictions on where they collect their grain. The experiment does not, however, eliminate ration shops altogether. The automated unit is meant specifically for free grain and does not have a payment facility. If govt announces items that have to be purchased, including supplies distributed under special schemes, those will continue to require a fair price shop dealer to collect payment and hand over the goods.
