Bare pillars stand at the entrance of GMC Miraj after an under-construction concrete arch collapsed, leaving seven people injured Kolhapur: Seven migrant construction workers were trapped under tonnes of concrete after a 25-foot slab of an arch being constructed at Govt Medical College and Civil Hospital in Miraj collapsed on Monday afternoon. The workers were pouring concrete into the arch, about 30 feet above the ground, when its supporting structure gave way. Assistant inspector Sandip Shinde of Mahatma Gandhi police station, who joined the rescue operation, said 25 workers were at the site at the time.

Doctors said they are stable now. Superintendent of police Tushar Doshi, who visited the site, said police would investigate possible negligence by the contractor. Doctors have said they are all stable and out of danger,” Doshi said. Two have suffered serious injuries, but they will recover,” Naikawdi said.
The men were pulled out from the debris and hospitalised. The freshly poured slab, along with the steel reinforcement, crashed down on the workers. The injured men have been identified as Akibul Sheikh, Anisur Rahman Malik, Arvind Kumar, Shahid Sheikh, Kader Sheikh, Minarul Sheikh and Siyaram Choudhary. All are residents of West Bengal. “The arch portion collapsed and trapped the workers at the site. Other workers, fire department and police personnel rescued all of them safely. The injured have been admitted to Miraj Civil Hospital. “A case under relevant sections, including negligence, will be registered against the contractor concerned. Personnel of the Mahatma Gandhi police station will investigate the incident,” he added. At the site, the concrete arch was found resting on wooden plywood sheets held up by bamboo supports. An official claimed that metal plates could have provided stronger support for the weight of the wet concrete and steel reinforcement. The pillars on either side of the arch had been constructed a couple of weeks ago. NCP MLC Idris Naikawdi alleged poor construction quality and sought an inquiry. “All seven workers have been admitted to the ICU. “The quality of the work was poor. The arch was at a height and should have been supported properly. I will request medical education minister Hasan Mushrif to initiate an inquiry into the work and the accident,” he added. Police will conduct a detailed panchnama and record statements of the workers and the contractor as part of the investigation. Download the TOI App.
