A 17-year-old student named Chinmay Patil survived a 70-foot drop while driving a friend’s car
NAVI MUMBAI: Days after a 17-year-old college student survived a 70-foot plunge onto the Belapur-Uran railway tracks, CBD-Belapur police have registered an FIR against the 18-year-old owner of the Honda City for allegedly allowing his minor friend to drive the car despite knowing that he did not have a valid driving licence. The FIR follows Thursday afternoon’s accident in which 17-year-old Chinmay Patil, an HSC student from a Sanpada college and a resident of Sector 22, Turbhe, was driving Gavhane’s Honda City on Parsik Hill in Belapur.
Under the provisions of law, he will be served a notice under the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), senior inspector Arun Pawar of CBD-Belapur police said. Police said the airbags opened and he was thrown onto the rear seat. Patil had bunked classes and borrowed his friend’s car to visit Parsik Hill, according to police. Central Railway chief PRO Swapnil Nila said train frequency on the harbour route was low.
Police have invoked relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Motor Vehicles Act against Gavhane. The accident briefly affected railway operations, with one train towards Uran getting stranded after the car landed on the track. Gavhane has not yet been summoned as police personnel are deployed for Ganpati immersion bandobast on Friday.
