Pune: In an attempt to stay off the police radar, a three-member gang allegedly turned to walkie-talkie sets to communicate during burglaries in Junnar taluka, avoiding cellphones that could have helped police track their movements.
The strategy, however, did not prevent Pune Rural police from solving a series of burglary cases and recovering stolen gold jewellery worth Rs 39 lakh. Police arrested Wasim Pathan (29), Adnan Pathan (26) and Mohammed Shaikh (40), all residents of Nashik.
An officer from Pune Rural police said the gang was allegedly involved in four recent burglaries in Junnar taluka. “Investigations revealed that the gang members used walkie-talkie sets to communicate with each other while committing the crimes instead of using cellphones, to avoid being tracked by the police through their phone locations,” the officer said. He said the police were investigating whether the accused were involved in other burglaries.
Police also arrested a jeweller from Niphad in Nashik district for allegedly purchasing stolen jewellery from the gang. Three cases were registered with Otur police, while one was registered with Narayangaon police.
