Nagpur: Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), Nagpur, emerged as Maharashtra ’s third most preferred institution for MD General Medicine in the NEET-PG Round 1 allotment, with its first seat claimed by a candidate ranked 140 at the All India level. Only Seth GS Medical College (KEM Hospital), Mumbai, which opened at AIR 36, and Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Medical College (Sion), Mumbai, at AIR 111, ranked ahead of it. However, the preference appears to be specific to General Medicine, as none of GMCH’s other departments figured among Maharashtra’s top three preferred institutions in the major specialties analysed.

The findings are based on Round 1 of the national-level counselling process, which covers 50% of the seats, before the state counselling round. GMCH’s General Medicine department has 37 postgraduate seats. The Round 1 allotment data also highlights the strong national preference for General Medicine and Radio-Diagnosis. Among the first 25 candidates allotted seats, 17 (73.91%) opted for General Medicine and four (17.39%) chose Radio-Diagnosis. Across the first 100 ranks, General Medicine accounted for 54 allotments (56.25%), while Radio-Diagnosis accounted for 28 (29.17%). Together, the two specialties made up 85.42% of allotments in this group. The trend persisted up to AIR 500. Of the 469 candidates allotted seats, 233 (49.68%) chose General Medicine and 163 (34.75%) opted for Radio-Diagnosis. Together, the two branches accounted for 84.43% of allotments.
